Alaska

Alaska has been regarded as the ultimate destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers alike. Known for its spectacular landscapes and attractions, Alaska offers its visitors the opportunity to take part in thrilling activities such as glacier trekking and rafting, as well as more relaxed activities such as hikes, fishing, and camping in some of the most beautiful locations you will ever set your eyes on.

Separated into five distinct regions, travelers should plan ahead as Alaska offers many activities, and could overwhelm the average traveler with all its options. From the remarkable wildlife to the ice glaciers that reach the sky, Alaska is a destination that all outdoor enthusiasts should visit at least once in their lifetime.

What to Do and See

Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is among the most captivating attractions that Alaska has to offer. Caused by a flow of ions radiating from the sun, these light particles become ensnared in the earth’s magnetic field and collide with atmospheric molecules, causing bursts of energy to create multi-colored waves that can be seen for miles throughout Alaska.

For those who wish to see the Northern lights, regions like Anchorage and Fairbank make for the optimal locations as Fairbank is located in the “Aurora oval,” an area of high auroral activity. With its relatively clear and dry winter skies, Fairbank offers the ultimate viewing experience.

Note: The best time to see the Northern Lights in Alaska is during the Aurora Season which is from the 21st of August to the 21st of April.

Matanuska / Glacier Trekking

Located two hours outside of Anchorage, Matanuska Glacier is the largest glacier in the United States that is accessible by vehicle. Stretching over a distance of 27 miles down from the Chugach Mountains, this natural wonder terminates alongside the Glenn Highway into the Matanuska River.

Matanuska offers visitors the opportunity to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of a massive, pristine glacier with its towering ice formations, ice caves, crevasses, and moulins. Whether you’re trekking on the ice, exploring the surrounding wilderness, or simply taking in the spectacular scenery, Matanuska provides an unforgettable outdoor experience.

Matanuska is accessible throughout the year making it a versatile destination for all kinds of travelers. Enjoy guided tours, outdoor activities, and stunning, picturesque backdrops throughout summer and winter.

Wildlife

Alaska’s wildlife is as diverse as its landscapes with people traveling from all across the globe to view Alaska’s Big 5, namely: bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves, and caribou. And not only that, but Alaska is also home to many marine mammals like the humpback whale, orcas, and gray whales.

For the best wildlife viewing experience in Alaska, several regions within the state offer exceptional opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The best region for you to visit will depend on your specific interests and the types of wildlife you hope to see.

Denali National Park offers travelers the opportunity to see some of Alaska’s most iconic animals such as grizzly bears, wolves, moose, and caribou. Kenai Peninsula with its coastal and mountainous landscapes offer a different viewing experience with travelers being able to see animals like the black bear, bald eagle, sea otters, and all the other marine life found along the coast.
